Abstract: This report presents the successful modernization of an international brand gearless elevator system in India using EC160A intelligent integrated machine. The primary challenge was encoder integration and achieving stable post-commissioning performance after the expiration of the existing AMC agreement. The solution ensured reliable operation, smooth ride quality, and long-term maintainability—eliminating dependency on OEM parts and service monopolies.

Keywords: EC160A, International brand Gearless Machine, Fenac Encoder, Modernization, Elevator Retrofit.

Customer Background
The customer owned a gearless elevator (1.75 m/s, 8-person capacity, 13 floors, 9 kW synchronous motor, 360 V supply). After AMC negotiations failed, the elevator remained non-operational. Since original parts were costly and proprietary, the customer needed a cost-effective and reliable modernization solution.

Challenges

  • The original system’s proprietary design prevented use of third-party spare parts.

  • Elevator was out of service due to AMC failure and lack of cost-effective repair options.

  • Compatibility had to be ensured with the original synchronous motor and encoder system.

  • Encoder installation and tuning were technically challenging.

  • Stable performance was required under real site operating conditions.

INVT Solutions
The modernization solution involved replacing the existing proprietary control system with EC160A intelligent integrated drive.

System Components:

  • EC160A-015-4(A) Intelligent Integrated Machine (1 unit)

  • Fenac-2048-R7/PT Encoder

  • EC-PAD Handheld Operator

  • DC-03S Display and Calling Boards (14 units)

  • Brake Resistors (32Ω / 5000W)

Key Features Implemented:

  • Integrated controller + inverter design for simplified installation.

  • High-performance vector control with encoder feedback for synchronous motors.

  • Dual communication options (serial & parallel).

  • Remote monitoring and debugging via TCP/IP module.

  • ARD function for UPS-based emergency evacuation.

System Commissioning:

  • Encoder was installed, aligned, and properly wired to ensure accurate motor feedback.

  • Motor parameters (rated power, voltage, frequency, current) were configured.

  • Speed profile and floor height data were programmed into EC160A.

  • Brake timing, ASR gain tuning, and UPS detection settings were optimized.

  • Trial runs were conducted to verify acceleration/deceleration curves and levelling accuracy.

  • Final tuning achieved smooth ride comfort and stable performance.

Result

  • Stable elevator operation with precise speed control and levelling accuracy.

  • Reliable encoder feedback loop ensured smooth start and stop performance.

  • Emergency rescue function worked seamlessly during power outage tests.

  • Maintenance costs were reduced through use of open-architecture components and independent service options.

  • Long-term maintainability was secured using open-architecture components.

Customer Feedback
The customer expressed high satisfaction, particularly noting:

  • Smooth elevator ride and consistent performance post-modification.

  • Significant cost savings compared to OEM service contracts.

  • Trust in INVT technology for future modernization and expansion.

Conclusion
This project demonstrates that EC160A intelligent integrated drive is designed to integrate with and modernize existing international brand elevator systems. Even with challenging encoder integration tasks, the modernization achieved excellent performance and reliability. This solution offers a scalable, cost-effective alternative to OEM AMC services, empowering building owners with service flexibility and long-term support.
